'Meera' (1947)- Hindi Film on the life of Meerabai

Dear Friends, today I am going to tell you about very special film- 'Meera', which was made way back in 1947 and the surprising fact is that the famous classical singer M S Subbhalakshmi played the role of Meera in this film.

At first, this film was made in a south Indian language, in the year 1945. After seeing its success there,  a Hindi version of the film was also releasd in 1947, with reshooting some of the scenes in Vrindavan, Dwarka, Chitor and some other places. So some of the scenes have dubbing over the original south Indian language, and some scenes have direct Hindi dialogues.

All the songs are sung by M S Subbhalakshmi herself, as we can expect. The intensity of Meera's devotion can be felt thr' each of the songs. The music is typical of that time, slow and classical based.

This Black and White film was directed by Mr. Ellis R Dungan. , who was originally not from India but came to India and made many films while staying in this country.

The film portarays Meera's journey very nicely, we can feel her emotions, her longing for the Lord and at last, her merging with the Lord!!

Now let me tell you how I came to know about this film. Recently, it was shown on DD National or DD Bharti on a Sunday (may be) night, from 10 pm. It was just a  coincidence that I tuned that channel at 11 pm and watched the film till its end at 12:30 am. Loved it indeed!!!

Then next day I searched about the film on the internet and here are the links of all those article/ videos which I have got. You'll be able to know many more facts about the film by visiting all these pages-

Here is a beautiful and elaborate blog post on the film, great writing by the author of that blog-

'Shyam Ghanashyam tumi dukhobhonjan'- Bengali song on Shri Krishna

Now we have another song on Shri Krishna, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. This is a prayer to the Lord, it tells us about the beauty of the Lord, about His 'Karuna' for His devotees, that He completely eliminates sorrow from our life. The song also laments that we tend to forget the Lord, forget to feel grateful, but still, He knows about the innermost feelings of our heart. He is the Almighty. Anything can happen if He wishes so! So we pay our salutations to Him repeatedly.

I don't know about the lyricist or composer of this song.

Here are the nice lyrics-

Shyam Ghonoshyam tumi dukhobhonjon
Pronaam raakhi tobo paaye, tobo paaye.

Shyam monohar adhare bongshi dhoro
Dole dole dole monobaan (?)
Shire mukut shobha mukh koto monolobha
Oporupo nayan bishal
Bhajan bina din britha chole jaaye,
Pronaam raakhi tobo paaye, tobo paaye.

Shyam Ghonoshyam tumi dukhobhonjon....

Ki bolibo ami Antarjaami
Jaano tumi praaner kotha
Monobaashona Probhu
Bhulini to ami kobhu
Achhe kichhu moner betha
Shob e hote paare Naath tomari kripaay,
Pronaam raakhi tobo paaye, tobo paaye.

Shyam Ghonoshyam tumi dukhobhonjon...

And you can listen to the song here. Song number 34 in this page:-

'Nawal Kishor Shyam Shundar'- Bengali Song on Shri Krishna

Dear Friends,

Now I am posting a beautiful Bengali song on Shri Krishna. This song is taken from the film 'Ajasra Dhanyavaad' and it is sung by Md. Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh. The BEAUTY of the Lord has been narrated in such details  in this song, that you could almost SEE the the Lord in front of your eyes, while listening to the song!

Here are the lyrics-

Nawal kishore Shyam Shundar
Jalad ange shyamal bibha
Obhishaari bongshidhaari
Ruper jyoti mori ki ba

Digonte oi purno shoshi
Chondraboli kunje boshi
Muroli taari tole dhoni
Shune moyur dolaay greeba.

I particularly like the classical touch in the song, the way the 'taans' and 'alaaps' are perfomed, they just added to the Beauty of the song!

And the 'sa ga pa ni sa' at the end of the song, is truly marvellous!!

Sadly, I do not know about the lyricist or composer of the song.

You can listen to the song here-

'Mai zindegi ka saath nibhaata chala gayaa' - A song from the Hindi film 'Hum Dono' (1961)

As I have mentioned in my last post that I have some philosoph\ical songs to share :), here is the second song in that series. 'Hum Dono' (1961) has wonderful music!! All the songs are capable to make us 'Feel' the words in our heart. This song, which comes when Dev Anand has joined the Army, portrays his mental state in that situation. In the previous scene, he faced the rejection from the father of his beloved (Sadhna),  then he decided to serve the nation and take life as it comes.

Here is the lyrics :

Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhaata Chala Gayaa
Har Fikr Ko Dhuen Me Udaata Chala Gayaa

Har Fikr Ko Dhuen Me Udaa...

Barbaadiyon Ka Shok Manaana Fizul Tha
Manaana Fizul Tha...
Barbaadiyon Ka Jashn Manaata Chala Gayaa

Har Fikr Ko Dhuen Me Udaa...

Jo Mil Gaya Ussi Ko Muqaddar Samajh Liya
Muqaddar Samajh Liya
Jo Kho Gaya Main Usko Bhulaata Chala Gayaa

Har Fikr Ko Dhuen Me Udaa...

Gham Aur Khushi Me Farq Na Mehsoos Ho Jahaan
Na Mehsoos Ho Jahaan
Main Dil Ko Us Muqaam Pe Laata Chala Gaya

Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhaata Chala Gayaa
Har Fikr Ko Dhuen Mein Udaata Chala Gayaa.

(lyrics available on internet)

The way it is said that 'Gham Aur Khushi Me Farq Na Mehsoos Ho Jahaan / Main Dil Ko Us Muqaam Pe Laata Chala Gaya'-- truly a a state of 'Sthitapragnya' (Wise person)! When you feel 'Equal' in sadness and happiness!! Attaining that state!!

Another beautiful exprerssion- 'Jo Mil Gaya Ussi Ko Muqaddar Samajh Liya/ Jo Kho Gaya Main Usko Bhulaata Chala Gaya'- Contentment ('Santosh') is such a great virtue! So important in our life!! To Accept what one has got and not to crave/ lament for something lost. This is the proper way to lead a meaningful life.

Learning from life, giving it proper value and then moving ahead.... Living each moment 'Being Aware', and still, being 'Free'....

All these elements make the song such a favourite of mine!!

With Best Wishes for all,

Jai Shri Krishna!
