Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (14) - Preparation for the Great Marriage

On the appropriate time, the 'baraat' leaves Ayodhya and receives a grand welcome when they reach Mithila. The scene where Raja Janak welcomes Raja Dashrath is so Outstanding it its Humility that one can feel the Warmth of a Sincere Heart from both the sides, in it. They appreciate each other's gracious presence and feel blessed with the beginning of this new relation. Guru Vsahishtha says everything happens according to God's Will. King Janak tells Raja Dashrath to consider himself as a 'servant'. In reply to that Raja Dashrath says it is he who is asking for Janak's daughter, so he is in the place of a 'receiver'. He is under the 'obligation' of Raja Janak. Then Sage Shataanand suggests them to take rest. It is decided that they will start the discussion on the marriage ceremony on the next day.

A beautiful scene where Sincere Mutual Respect has been shown. We all should aim for such Ideal relation in our life!

Meanwhile Lakshman comes to Shri Ram with the news of the arrival of the 'Baraat' from Ayodhya and requests him to go and meet them. But Shri Ram explains that as they are under the order of Sage Vishwamitra, so they should wait for his permission.  On that very moment, Vishwamitra comes and appreciates such a noble decision from Shri Ram and takes both of them to meet the 'baraatis' from Ayodhya.

In this scene, we can see Dashrath meeting Sage Vishwamitra, along with Ram-Lakshman, and also Ram -Lakshman meeting with Bharat Shatrughna, after a long time :). Sweet family meeting :).

Now I will write about the emotional appeal of the scene- as soon as they enter room where Dashrath is seated, we have an emotional response from Dashrath, which is aptly expressed by the song used in the scene- 'Bhoop biloki jabahi muni'....- taken from Ramcharitmanas. The words are so deep, going accurately with the emotions felt by Dasharath!!! I really really love that song, it tells us that for Dashrath, meeting Ram after such a long time, seems like getting life back in a dead body. Wonderful expression! And the way the song is sung, also convey the emotions.... For me, this short scene is one of the great scenes of Ramayan :)... From the point of view of actual activity, there is nothing much, but the intense union of Dashrath with his beloved son, stays in our heart forever!!

A continuation of this scene can be found in the scene which comes next. That is - when Shri Ram goes to serve his father at bedtime. Dashrath asks Shri Ram whether he missed Ayodhya or not, in all these days. Shri Ram replies that he missed Ayodhya but his focus was in completion of the task given by his elders, so he controlled his emotions. He also tells Dashrath that he always feels the blessings of elders with him, his Father has always inspired him in all his actions. Dasharath starts praising him for all his great deeds but Shri Ram takes them only as a father's love for his son. ....  Then the father jokingly asks him about his inspiration behind his action of 'Shivadhanu bhang' which makes Shri Ram shy. Then Dashrath tells him to take leave.

Can't describe the emotions of the scene completely, as it also needs to be watched to FEEL the emotions of both sides. Dashrath's Affection for his son and Shri Ram's Humilty about himself, his Respect for his father- all are so clear in this scene! Shri Ram, being fully aware of His Great Power remains obliged to his father , giving him full credit for all his wonderful deeds!!!... The way Dashrath expresses his aim of life which was normal (inspired by fame/ glory/ power) and compares it with high aim ('Welfare' of the creation) of Shri Ram, proves the Sincerity in his character. It also proves the Respect he has for his son! It is so evident from Dashrath's Virtues only, why the Almighty has decided to be born as a son to him.... Raja Dashrath, a noble character indeed!! How the great Lord accepts all our offerings!! How He responds to the love which is offered to Him by his devotees!! This short scene is so poignant in its emotions.....

In the palace, Lakshman along with Bharat and Shatrughna are talking about the Shri Ram. Lakshman is narrating how Shri Ram described his agitated state of mind after meeting Sita for the first time. Bharat and Shatrughna listen to the description eagerly when Shri Ram enters the room. The brothers become shy and finally Shatrughna asks Shri Ram about Love. Shri Ram explains that Love comes naturally in all of us, like the spontaneous relation between the waves and the moon, a mother and her son, between two brothers, in the same way Mother nature shows us the way to love. As the relations with our father and mother are pre-destined, in the same way our life partner is also pre-destined. So , when we meet her, our duty is to Trust her Sincerely and be Loyal to her. We get an idea of the Maryaada Purushottam Shri Ram here, telling about Love, Trust and Loyalty; Simple yet Profound words from the Lord!

In the next day the discussion about the marriage ceremony of Siya Ram takes place in Mithila raajsabha. Shataanandji says that, with the triumph of Shri Ram over the Shivadhanush, they (Ram-Sita) can be already be considered as married. Now only the formal marriage ceremony is to take place, according to the culture/ tradition of both the houses. They ask for Dashrath's permission, who is very glad to grant it :).  Sage Vashishtha explains how a marriage is not merely a relation between two individual persons but it includes the traditions, culture, and beliefs of the two houses. After that we also get a detailed account of the ancestors of Raja Dsahrath. - The 'ideals of marraige' is presented in such a nice way here. When we attend a marriage, it is very very rare that we understand it's full implication, which is narrated here by Sage Vashishtha.

Now Janaka offers Urmila's hand for Lakshman and Vishwamitra proposes the names of Raja Janak's brother Kushaddhwaj's daughters- Maandavi and Shrutakeerti for Bharat and Shatrughna. All are very happy with these new developments :). They decide all the four marriages will take place together after two days, and start the preparation for all the rituals.

This news reaches Sita's chamber where all her sisters are also present . They becomes shy as well as happy at the same time :).

In Ayodhya, Rani Kaikeyi receives a second letter from Mithila, written by Dashrath, along with the regular letter which she receives everyday (about the King's wellbeing). The second letter brings in it the news of the marriage of Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna. She becomes very excited and ignoring her maid Manthara's words,( who tries to stop her), Kaikeyi  goes to Maharani Kaushalya's room. After receiving the news, Kaushalya and Sumitra feel blissful!!! They instruct to light up the whole palace, to distribute sweets to all, to give alms to Brahmins, and to start a grand preparation to welcome the newly weds :).

As Kaikeyi returns to her room, Manthara once again comes to her and advices her to do some actions individually, (not depending on Maharani Kaushalya always ). Manthara repeatedly makes Kaikeyi aware of the fact that Bharat is 'her' son. And also reminds the fact that she has a great paternal house of which she should be very proud of. She should send a messenger to her paternal house (Kekay desh). Kaikeyi agrees to this proposal by Manthara. Thus Manthara tries to cut off Kaikeyi from the 'oneness' with the joy of the palace,  which Kaikeyi was feeling just moments before...

Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (13) - News of Shivadhanu Bhang reaches Ayodhya

Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (13) - News of Shivadhanu Bhang reaches Ayodhya

We will start from the scene where we left in my last post. That is, Sage Parashuraam leaves the Swayamvar hall. Then Shri Ram touches the feet of King Janak and asks for his blessings. The king blesses him. Now Raja Janak asks Rishi Vishwamitra about the future course of action, how they should proceed about the marriage ceremony of Siya Ram. Vishwamitra tells him to send a messenger to Ayodhya with all the news and also to start preparing for the great marriage ceremony.

Next comes a scene which is full of JOY, and one of my Favourite scenes :). It starts when Bharat and Shatrugna enters King Dashrath and Rani Kaikeyi's chamber with the letters of Raja Janak and sage Vishwamitra in their hand. Kaushalya also enters the room. Then Bharat and Shatrughna start telling them about the content of the two letters. Here they create such a Sweet Moment when they enact all the heroic deeds of Shri Ram, (as written in the letters), that the king and all the queens remain Spellbound while listening to the glory of Shri Ram!!... They even ask 'phir' , again and again to request Bharat to continue with his desription :) :) .... Great great acting by both Bharat and Shatrugna, we could actually FEEL the emotions ( excitement)  of all the characters here!!!! The queens start rejoincing after listening the good news. They already start dreaming about the marriage of Siya Ram, about their grandchildren in future :).  Then Bharat- Shatrugna also joins the lovely imaginations :).

In the next scene Dashrath along with kulguru Vashishtha, meet the messenger (Devvrat) who has come from Mithila. Rishi Vashishtha accepts the invitation from Mithila and tells him that the 'baraat' will reach Mithila soon. Devvrat eulogizes the valours of Ram- Lakshman and appreciates Raja Dashrath for his great sons. Dashrath tells him that he misses his dear son Ram. He also gives some gifts ro Devvrat, who respects this noble gesture by the king but also expresses his inability to accept any gift from the in-laws house of Mithila's daughter- Sita. After the messenger is gone, Vashishtha and Dashrath decide that they will start the journey on the 2nd day from that day. They also decide to take the noble persons of the state and the 'nagavaasis' along with them, who want to attend the marriage ceremony.

This one is a small but beautiful scene, specially the interacion between Dashrath and Devvrat is so Humble!! Ramayan always shows us the 'Ideals of Action' in any situation!!

In the mean time Maharani Kaushalya starts charitable works for the welfare of her son. She feels even if a single person of her kingdom is poor or sad, the king does not have any right to celebrate his happiness. She also asks Aarya Sumantra to send her warm greetings to Rani Suanayana in the form of a personal message.

Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (12) - Sita Swayamvar (Part 2) : Visit of Parashuraam

Yes, Dear Friends, today we will see the part where the great sage Parashuraam enters the Swayamvar hall.

Last day we ended when Mata Sita Garlanded Shri Ram after He broke the Shiv dhanush. It is just then, Sage Parashuram entered the Swaymavar hall in great anguish. Seeing his usual angry self, all the kings became afraid. Raja Janak, Sage Shataanand, Mata Sita and Sage Vishwamitra pay their respects to Parashuram, along with Shri Ram and Lakshman. Shri Ram tries to speak politely and introduces Himself as a 'servant' of the great Parashuram. But he (Parashuram) does not pay much attention to this as he is very angry and asks the name of the person who has broken the famous Shiv dhanush. He says after suddenly knowing about the breaking of Shivdhanush, he left his ‘tapasya’ in Mahendra Parvat and came to visit Janak's court to know about the culprit.

Shri Ram tries to tell him that if anyone can break the Shivadhanush, he must be a servant of the Great Parashuram!

Now Lakshmanji also comes in front and tries to calm down the anger of Parashuraam by bringing humuor in his approach. He says that they have broken many bows in their childhood and never got punished for that, but now what is the reason for the great sage Parashuraam to get depressed in this particular incident! Their arguments become more and more tense... Parashuram threatens to kill Lakshman saying that he has already killed many kshatriyas before. On this, Lakshman also tries to rebuke him by referring to many other deeds done by Parashuraam in the past.

Seeing that the situation is going out of control, Shri Ram tells Lakshman to control himself. King Janak tells Parshuraam to renounce his anger on Lakshman as he is only a child. A child's mischievous nature amuses the parents, they don't make them angry (such a sweet sentence and delivered in a polite way by Raja Janak!!! ).

Now Shri Ram comes in the picture. He tells Parshuram that he is the person who has done the misdeed of breaking the Shivadhanush. Parashuram is astonished to notice the opposite nature (/ approach) of the two brothers, (as one is teasing him and another is humble in His approach :) ). He says that merely the name 'Raam' is not enough and challenges Shri Ram for a fight. Shri Ram says as a kshtriya he will fight but kshatriyas do not fight with a Brahmin. And moreover he (Parashuraam) is the Lord of Shri Ram, so there can't be any fight between them. Shri Ram also says that till now Parashuraam is not aware of his 'Real Self' ( /i.e.- 'divinity'), but He (Shri Ram) is already aware of it. And it is here that He says - ‘Mera to chhota sa naam hai, Raam'- (so sweet and humble words from the Lord)!!! He also says that  with Parashuraam, His (Shri Ram’s) defeat will also be considered to be a win :) . Now we have a doha from RCM-

"Suni mrudu goodh vachan Raghupati ke, ughade patal Parashudhar mati ke."

And Parashuraam somewhat understands who Shri Ram is, as he sees 'Chturbhuj Vishnu roop' in Shri Ram. He (Parashuraam) gives his own bow to Shri Ram and asks him to string it, so that he can be sure of the identity of Shri Ram. Now comes another line from RCM-

"Ram Ramaapati, kar dhanu leu, khenchahu chaap mite sandehu, khenchahu chaap, mite sandehu."

As Shri Ram strings the bow, Parashuraam's realisation is complete!!! He recognises The Lord in Him!!! Now Shri Ram asks Parashuraam about the Aim of that arrow. Parashuraam requests him to destroy all his good deeds, so that his pride, which caused him so much arrogance, will also die. He will be free again. Shri Ram does that.

Now Parashuram prays for the victory of Shri Ram, bows down to Shri Ram and He blesses him. The Sage takes leave from the Swayamvar hall.

After the scene, Ramanand Saagarji explains to us about the great sage Parashuraam, who destroyed kshatriyas form earth, 21 times. After that he gave all the land to his teacher, who told him to leave the land and stay somewhere else. So he used to stay on Mahendra parvat.

Along with his great valour. Parashuraam has also attained many merits through ‘tapas’, and thus, in spite of being an ansh avtar of Shri Hari, he became proud of all his merits. This pride was the evil in him, which prevented him from seeing the greatness in others. So he took so much time to recognize Shri Ram!

Pride and anger together makes a man excited and thus he loses his strength. Lakshman took this approach to control the anger of Parashuraam. So, in our life also, we should remember not to get excited or angry in any critical situation. Only staying calm will lead us to the proper way, (i.e.- to victory).

Another point to note in the swayamvar sequence is the Restraint shown in the character of Shri Ram! In spite of having the ability to break the Shiva Dhanush and knowing fully well the love of Mata Sita for Him, He waited patiently for his teacher (Vishwamitra’s) permission to do so.  We need such restraint in today’s world also, which helps us to keep proper order and rules in the society.

This is indeed a great scene. The pride of Parashuraam and its destruction is shown. Lakshman's nature, his spontaneous defense of Shri Ram (as we have seen in the Swayamvar scene also), his approach to pacify the anger of Parashuram, which comes in contrast with King Janak's calm approach. And most importantly, Shri Ram's Greatness, Humility, and Lordship can be seen here.

Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (11) - Sita Swayamvar (Part 1)

Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (11) - Sita Swayamvar (Part 1)

After more than one and half years, today I have returned with some more sequences from 'Ramayan' :).

Last time we saw Siya-Ram first meeting at the Pushp vaatika. Now we will attend the Swayamvar of Sita Mata :).

Now as a preparation for the grand Swayamvar sabha, we have a few short scenes, where Mata Sita is getting ready for the ceremony and on the other hand, Shri Ram and Lakshman talk about the grand event  which will take place in the next day. In the morning, Guru Vishwamitra asks Shri Ram And Lakshman to come with him to the swayambar hall.

The whole sequence from now on is filled with Soul Stirring Music. It is very natural for the audience to get immersed in the Bliss of  this sequence and tasting the Nectar of Devotion! So, I will also try to write a line or two about each song in this sequence.

Now we are in the sabha, where many kings are already seated, discussing about the Shivadhanush, Raja Janak enters the hall with Kulguru Shatanand.

Then Guru Vishwamitra along with Shri Ram and Lakshman enter the hall, and we have the beautiful part quoted from 'RamCharitManas' (RCM)--

'Rajkunvar tehi avsar aaye,...'

- where we get the idea that all the persons present in the sabha are mesmerised by the beauty of the two brothers. They shinning like the bright moon among the stars.

And here we have the famous line-

'Jinki rahi bhaavana jaisi, prabhu murati tin dekhi taisi'

- which says a lot about the way anyone can ‘perceive’ the Lord or experience Him in his/ her life. The Lord  appears to the person in the same form as ‘wished’ by the devotee :). Such a Great Great Compassion of the Lord!!!

[The same theme can be seen in the other great TV Series by Shri Ramanand Saagarji- ‘Shri Krishna’, where Krishna comes to kill Kans. In that sequence,  we have the song- ‘Kaandhe liye gajdant...'- which also shows us how many different ways the Lord is being ‘perceived' by the persons present in the sabha of Kans. Beautiful scene!!!!]

Now coming back to the Swayamvar :)….

Seeing the glorious appearance of Shri Ram, now the guests start to discuss about Him.

After all the guests have arrived, King Janak greets the guests and then orders to bring Mata Sita to the Sabha. Here we have these linesfrom RCM-

'Jani su-avsaru Siye tab, pathai janak bolaai,...'

This song tells us that after getting the instruction from her father Sita comes to the sabha along her sakhis. The beauty of ‘Jagat Janani Mata Sita’ creates a magic over all the persons present there. But the eyes of Mata Sita search only for Shri Ram and after seeing him near Muni Vishwamitra, she feels relieved. RCM lines- ‘Muni sameep dekhe dou bhaai, lage lalaki lochan nidhi paai’

As she cannot look at Shri Ram in front of all the elders, so she keeps him in her heart –

‘Gurujan laaj, samaaju bad, dekhi Siya sakuchaani;
Lagi bilokan sakhin tan, Raghuveer hi ur aani.’

Such a beautiful scene!!! You need to see it to FEEL the emotions of the characters...

Next we have the singers/ bards who come to the sabha and tell us about the glorious ancestors of Raja Janak. They praise all of them along with the present king in such a way that expresses that how much the ‘prajaajan’ love their king!! Very very nice expressions and emotions potrayed about the supremacy and generosity of the royal house of Mithila!!!

They also tell us about the challenge of the king that the person who will be able to string the Shivadhanush, will win the hand of his daughter- Raajkumari Sita.

Now the actual contest begins. Many kings try but no one is able to lift the bow.

Queen Sunayna feels distressed and starts worrying about the future of her daughter. Her sister in laws comforts and tells her to wait with patience.

Here many great lines from RCM have been used, which tell us that the wise kings did not even touch the bow knowing it to be beyond their capacity. But some proud king tried and failed and it seemed that after each failed attempt, the Shivadhanush took away all their strength (i.e.- strength of the kings’) and became more and more heavy with passing time...

After such horrible performances from the kings of different states, Raja Janak becomes very depressed and expresses his frustration that now the whole ‘Aaryavarta’ is devoid of producing any true warrior! The world will ridicule him for organizing such a failed event!!.... Now if he breaks his promise, his honour will be lost. On the other hand, if he keeps his promise, then his daughter will remain unmarried for the whole life. Such a dilemma for him!

Lakshman hears all this and starts protesting, saying that Raghukul members have always proved their worth in the past, such words by the king challenges them. His elder brother, is alone capable of doing any work which seems impossible for others.

King Janak feels sorry about his own words and says he never intended to hurt their feelings.

Now Sage Vishwamitra thinks that it is the proper time for Shri Ram to go to the challenge and he orders Shri Ram to string the bow and bring smile to the sad face of the king. Now starts another BEAUTIFUL song sequence- ‘Vishwamitra samay shubh jaani…,' which is again taken from the dohas of Shri Ram Charit Manas. Memorable words by Tulsidasji!! It tells us that after getting the order of his guru, how easily Shri Ram went to the dias! He went there and it seemed as if the Sun has arrived on the dias. The song tells us about His ease, his grace, his valour….

Along with this we also get to know the emotions of Mata Sita in the continuation of the same song. She is starts praying to all the gods and goddesses she has worshipped till now, so that the weight of the Shivadhanush lessens down and it becomes easier for Shri Ram to lift and string it. The wonderful expression of Sita Mata can only be Felt after Immersing Completely in the lyrics of the song. Where she says-

'Tan man vachan mor panu saachaa,
Raghupati pad saroj chitu raachaa'

And again-

'Te Bhagwaan, sakal ur-vaasi,
Karahu mohe Raghuvar ki daasi,
Karahu mohe Raghuvar ki daasi.'

Then we listen the reply from the Devi Ma-

'Jehi ke jehi par satya sanehu, jehi ke jehi par satya sanehu;
So tehi milai na kachhu sandehu, so tehi milai na kachhu sandehu.'

- so Profound words, which is quoted even today!!!

Now Shri Ram is on the dias and all the people are looking at him. The whole scene seems as if like a picture, where there is no movement in the scene, everyone is so ‘tanmay' in Excitement (what will happen next? ) and also in Bliss ( to watch the action of the Lord).

Shri Ram FEELS the emotions, which is going on in the heart of Sita Mata and realises that he should not lengthen the process of stringing the bow, otherwise Sita won't be able to control herself. Tulsidasji tells us about these observation of Shri Ram in these lines-

'Trishite baari binu jo tanu tyaagaa,
Mue karai ka sudhaa tadaagaa!!!
Ka barakha jab krishi sukhane,
Samay chuke puni ka pachhitaane;'

Now we get an idea about the Compassionate Nature of the Lord!!!! He knows the heart of all the beings!!!! So, here comes these lines –

'As jiye jaani Jaanaki dekhi,
Prabhu pulake lakhi preeti bisekhi;'

- we get a taste of His love for Mata Sita. That He also FEELS the same Love as Sita is containing in her heart for Him!!

So He attempts to string the bow very easily and the bow breaks down. Everyone present there now takes a sigh of relief!!!!

Then a very happy Rani Sunayana tells Sita to garland Shri Ram as her groom. She comes with her sakhis, but at the end she becomes shy and feels unable to move forward to Shri Ram. The background song here is 'Shri Raghuvar komal kamalnayan ko, pehenaao jaymaalaa', which reflects the happy mood of the situation. And also has a sweet line- ‘Shri Ram chakit, chitave Sita ka, adbhut roop niraalaa…’- showing us the unique beauty of Mata Sita when she has Shri Ram in her eyes :).

Now the sakhis of Sita bring her to Shri Ram and she garlands Him :), and touches His feet. They both smile.

Here ends the first part of Swayambar :). This one is a long post, it could have been longer :) ... left out many many points, will try to come back to them later :)...
