Radharani - A Novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

This is a famous story by Sahityasamrat Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Most of us know the story. I read it for the first time during student life.

Recently I saw the name of the story on Youtube as audiobook by Mirchi Bangla Youtube Channel. As we know that this story begins on the day of Rathyatra, so this year I listened to the story on the occasion of Rathyatra. It was such a nice experience that brought a smile on my face.

The sweetness of the story, the purity of the feelings of both Rukmini Kumar and Radharani capture our heart. We feel their emotions and we feel happy when they meet at the end of the story.

Listening the story on the Rathyatra day made it a special experience for me and enhanced my enjoyment.

With lots of love for all,

Obhinetri- a Story by Ashapurna Devi

This is a famous short story by Ashapurna Devi.

Many years ago I read it for the first time.  Recently I listened to the audiobook of the story in the Youtube channel of 'Prithar Ichhedana'.

It portrays the psychology of the mind of a woman. Women bind the family with her love and care. She plays many roles according to the needs of her family. This story shows us how women manage the difficult situations which keep on challenging all of us while leading family life. It takes wisdom and a loving heart to keep the wheels of the family running. This story is both amusing as well as a lesson about life. We learn to appreciate the effort given by women to nurture her family. I would request all of you to listen to the story and enjoy it.

With lots of best wishes

Rathyatra 2025

Shri Jagannath Rathyatra is a unique festival when the Lord of the world comes out of his temple to meet the devotees. Devotees eagerly wait for this day to have darshan of their favourite Lord. Like every year, this year also Rathyatra took place in Puri Dham. Doordarshan National airs the live video and commentary of Rathyatra every year. The anchors use Hindi, English and Sanskrit language in their commentary. They give very detailed information about the ritual. So I always enjoy listening to it. This time Rathyatra was delayed due to heavy crowd. So the yatra could not be completed on that day. The yatra was finished on the next day when Shri Jagannath, Shri Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra reached Gundicha temple. After seven days, Bahuda yatra, Suna besha, Adhara pana and Niladri Bije- all these celebrations took place generating bliss to the devotees. Many vloggers and live telecast from different media agencies covered all these celebrations during these days. In this way devotees get the chance to experience these special darshans of all the three deities through Rathyatra festival.

Kul Chhere Eshe- A Bengali Song

Today I am sharing a beautiful song which tells us about the journey of life. It is written and composed by Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh and sung by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty.

In this song, life is compared with a river. Any two phases of life are compared with the two banks of a flowing river. The feelings evoked while crossing the river are narrated in the song.

Many times we feel confused while taking a decision about life. In this song we feel all those emotions which we go through while moving from one phase of life to another. The starting of the song tells us about this feeling.

The known life is always preferable to us. It gives us a sense of security. The first stanza of the song tells us about all these emotions. While taking a decision to move forward in life, we remember the memories of joy and sadness attached with the current situation. It seems very hard for us to leave the cosy place.

Now we come to the middle part of the song. It narrates how the fading images of one phase of life, and the fear of a new uncertain life- both are felt by us at the same time.

While continuing the journey, gradually we also feel an attraction towards the unknown mysteries of the future life. It seems as if the future is near, it is full of positive hopes, as if it is blessing us with fearlessness. This is narrated in the last stanza of the song.

The song ends with the positive note that fills us with a the hope of a promising future. The concept of the song is very unique. It is the reason it is one of my favourite song. And also the style of singing by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty is excellent as we all know, which adds to the beauty to the song. I have also listened to another rendition of the song by Bani Konar in the year 1954.

Do listen to the song and enjoy.

With lots of best wishes,
Jai Shri Krishna.

Blue Beetle- English Film (2023)

Blue Beetle film is based on DC comic characters. The main storyline revolves around a scientific innovation of Blue Beetle machine which will make a normal human being capable of super human powers.

Victoria, the owner of a defence technology company, wants to capture the machine as well as the power of Blue Beetle and use it for their profit. By a coincidence, Jenny, the niece of Victoria, gets hold of the machine. Through Jenny, the scarab reaches a young boy Jaime, who gets the power of the machine by sudden interaction with it. Thus starts the main story of the film; how both of them team up and save the machine from the evil clutches of the current director of the company, is shown in the film.

The story goes in expected way, there is no surprise element in it. The young hero, his careless and inconfident approach in the beginning, later becoming responsible and matured- we have watched such storyline in numerous films.

The hero Jaime lives in a joint family with many members, all of them have their own unique characteristics. They all make a happy family in spite of their differences. This quality of Jaime's family is appreciated by the heroine Jenny.

In the end Jaime defeats the main villain Victoria and the machine bot Carapac, who was helping Victoria.

Overall, the film is targeted for young audience, who may not have watched other films based on such comic characters. For matured audiences, there is nothing much to watch. It is only an action film with futuristic machines and special effects.

With lots of best wishes.

Pachhe Loke Kichhu Bole- A Famous Bengali Poem

'Pachhe Loke Kichhu Bole' is a famous Bengali poem, which all of us have read during our school days. It tells us to be confident in our daily life. We need to have full faith in our decisions, only thus we can act courageously in life. If we keep on thinking about the reaction of other people while taking every step, we can't progress ahead. Many times a person having a good intention or planning to do a good action, gets demotivated by people around him and leaves the task midway. This poem teaches us not to be affected by opinions of others.

And with this poem, I am remembering and paying my respect to the famous poetess Kamini Roy, who wrote this poem along with many other famous poems in Bengali. She was born on 12 October in the year 1864 at Basunda, now in Bangladesh. She was the first honours graduate in British India in the year 1886. Along with writing many poems, she has contributed intensely towards society in many social causes as well as women's rights. She left us on 27 September 1933.

We are grateful to all such noble souls for inculcating values in our life.

Do read the poem from from any book or by searching the internet, if you have not read it before.

With lots of best wishes for all of you.

Jai Shri Krishna.

The Vaccine War

The Vaccine War is a film directed by Vivek Agnihotri. It tells the story of the research and invention of Covid Vaccine by India (Bharat). The film is based on a book written by Dr Balram Bhargav. Perhaps that is the reason that this film portrays so much detailed process of laboratory experiments. Thus making the audience aware of the contribution by the scientists of ICMR and NIV towards the great cause. How these two organisations cooperated and ultimately succeeded in discovering the vaccine. The film describes the critical situation faced by the country, the pressure with which the scientists worked all day and night, the sacrifices made by them in order to do the experiments. We as general public were ignorant of many of these happenings as the contribution of scientists were not mentioned in the mainstream media that much. Nana Patekar as the director of ICMR Dr Balram Bhargav and Pallavi Joshi as the head of NIV Dr Priya Abraham has done wonderful work. Along with them, Girija Oak, Saptami Gowda, Raima Sen, Anupam Kher, Nivedita Bhattacharya and other character artists have done great work. The direction is good and keeps the audience very much engrossed in the happenings of the film. The contribution of the female scientists are shown in many places of the film. The way they balanced their professional work along with household duties generate respect in the minds of the audience for these dedicated souls. We can witness true representation of woman empowerment through these characters. This film is a must watch for all the citizens of the country.
With lots of best wishes

Songs of Rajanikanta Sen (5)- Ami to Tomare Chahini Jibone

Today in the fifth part of the series, I am writing about another famous composition by Rajanikanta Sen, 'Ami to tomare chahini jibone.

Ami to Tomaare Chahini Jibone

Tumi obhaagaare cheyechho

Ami na daakite hridoyo maajhaare

Nije eshe dekha diyechho

Chiro aadorer binimoye shokha

Chiro obohelaa peyechho

Ami dure chhute jete du haato poshaari

Dhore tene kole niyechho

Ami to tomare...

O pothe jeyo na fire esho bole

Kaane kaane koto koyechho

Ami tobu chole gechhi firaaye aanite

Paachhe paachhe chhute giyechho

Ami to tomare...

Ei chiro oporadhi paatokir bojha

Haanshi mukhe tumi boyechho

Amar nijo haate gora bipoder maajhe

(Amaye) buke kore niye royechho

Ami to tomare....

I have listened to the rendition by Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. Many other artists have also sung this famous song.

In this song, the poet says God's love is unconditional. He stays with us always, protects us, guides us and accepts us each time whenever we move towards Him. It is the Lord who does all our work taking away all the burden from us.

This song reminded me of two songs from Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan.

1. During the Setu Bandhan song, the lyrics are-

Har kaarajme, nij bhakton ka, haath bataa dete hain,

Haath bataa dete hain,

Baadhaaon ke saare patthar Raam hata dete hain,

Apne upar le kar unka bhaar ghataa dete hain.

2. And the other song is when Ravan attacks Vibhishan with Shakti astra and Shri Ram takes the blow of the fierce weapon upon Himself. The lyrics of that song are-

Nahi Raghuveer sa mitra koi

Nahi Prabhu sa pratipal

Mitro ke sankat sahe

Bankar unki dhaal

May our mind always dwell in the thoughts of the lotus feet of the Lord.

Jai Shri Krishna.

Songs of Rajanikanta Sen (4)- Paatoki Boliye Ki Go

Today in the fourth part of the series, I am writing the lyrics of the song- 'Paatoki boliye ki go, paaye thela bhalo hoy'.

Paatoki Boliye Ki Go

Paaye thela bhalo hoy

Tobe keno paapi taapi

Eto aasha kore roy

Korite dhulaakhela oboshaano holo bela

Jara eshechhilo shaathe phele gelo oshomoye

Tobe keno...

Harayiye laabhe mule moronero shindhukule

Pothosraanto dehokhaani taaniyaa enechhi haaye

Jibone kokhono ami daakini hridoyoshwaami

E odeene e odheene tyejibe ki doyaamoy (tai)

Tobe keno...

In this song the poet asks the Lord to save him. He also realises that he has wasted his life in this world of Maya and at last has come to the Lord. He knows that the Lord will never refuse him, with this belief he has come to take refuge in the Lord. The last line- "E odeene e odheene tyejibe ki doyaamoy"- is wonderful!

I have heard the version of this song by Krishna Chattopadhyay and Chhabi Bondyopadhyay.

Do listen to this wonderful song :)

75th Independence Day- 15th August 2022- Bengali Songs Playlist

India celebrated its 75th Independence Day yesterday with great grandeur. Following the announcement by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, our tricoloured national flag was displayed in the balcony, door or rooftop of many households. In the morning, the address to the nation by the Prime Minster was also a great inspiration for many of us.

On this occasion of Independence day, I thought to share some of the famous patriotic songs in Bengali:-

# Utho go Bharoto Lokkhi

# Dhano dhanya pushpo bhora

# Potitoddharini Gange

# Bharot amar Bharotborsho

# Bongo amar janani amar

# Mayer deowa mota kapor

# Bolo bolo bolo shobe

# Ek e shutre baandhiyachhi

# Vande Mataram

# Chol re chol shobe Bharotoshontaan

# Bharotborsho shurjer ek naam

# O amar desher maati

# Jodi tor daak shune keu na aashe

# Mukrito mondiro shopano tole

# Sharthoko jonomo amar

# Chhere dao reshmi churi Bonginaari

# Ganga Shindhu Narmada

- It will be a nice playlist  reflecting patriotism.

Someday in future I will try to share Plylist of Hindi Patriotic Songs.

Vande Mataram!

Songs of Rajanikanta Sen (3)- 'Keno Bonchito Hobo Chorone'

Today, in the third part of the series, I am writing about the famous song- 'Keno bonchito hobo chorone'.

Keno bonchito hobo chorone

Ami koto aasha kore boshe achhi

Paabo jibone na hoy morone.

Aha tai jodi nahi hobe go

Paatoki taaron torite taapito

Aature tule na lobe go

Hoye pother dhulaaye ondho

Eshe dekhibo ki kheya bondho

Tobe paare boshe paar koro bole paapi keno taake deeno shorone?

Ami shunechhi hey trishahaari

Tumi ene daao taare prem omrito trishito je chaahe baari

Tumi aapona hoite howo aaponar

Jaar keho nai tumi achho tar

E ki shob michhe kotha bhaabite je betha

Boro baaje Prabhu morome

In this song the poet portrays the Lord as the Saviour of the sinners. He is the only hope for the persons who had trodden a wrong path in their life. The Lord never refuses anyone so the poet expresses his faith that he will also be saved by the Lord. And the lines

Tumi aapona hoite howo aaponar

Jaar keho nai tumi achho tar

-are so famous! So true!! We are so forgetful about this fact while living in the world of Maya, that's why the poet reminds us of the fact that only the Almighty is our Dearest :)

I have listened to one version of the song by Juthika Roy and another by Krishna Chattopadhyay. Do check them out :)

Jai Shri Krishna.

Songs of Rajanikanta Sen (2)- 'Tumi arupo shwarupo shaguna nirguna'

Today in my seond post in this series (for the first post, check out here),  I am taking the song- 'Tumi arupo shwarupo shaguna nirguna' by the famous poet - Rajanikanta Sen.

Tumi arupo shwarupo shaguno nirguno

Doyal bhoyaal Hari hey

Ami ki ba bujhi

Ami ki ba jaani

Ami keno bhebe mori hey.

Ki rupe eshechhi kemone ba jaabo

Ta bhabiye keno jibono katabo

Tumi aaniyaachho tomarei paabo

Eo shudhu mone kori hey.

Na raakhi jotil nyayer baarota

Bichaare bichaare baare oshaarota

Ami jaani tumi amar e debota

Tai ami hride dhori hey

Tai bole daaki praan jaha chaaye

Daakite daakite hridoyo juraaye

Jokhono jey rupe praan bhore jaaye

Tai dekhi praano bhori hey.

Here the poet expresses his salutations and absolute faith in the Almighty. He can be formless or He can take any form, (He can be Sagun or Nirgun), He can be gracious or strict, but He is the 'essence' of our whole existence. I especially like the last stanza where he says whenever I feel love for a certain form, I immerse in the that form to feel divine love. Such a great emotion!!!

Hinduism gives us this freedom to choose whatever form we wish to worship. Then the Lord blesses us so that we can have immovable faith in our chosen form.

I have listened the version sung by Krishna Chattopadhyay. Do check out her version from any video or audio App.

Jai Shri Krishna.

Songs of Rajanikanta Sen- 1 (Introduction)

It was the birthday of the great poet writer Rajanikanta Sen only two days back (26th July), so today I am starting a series on some of my favourite songs by the famous poet. The sincerity of his words as well as the devotional element infused in his creation, the way he expresses his complete surrender to the Almighty- all keep inspiring me in everyday life. He is also known as Kantokobi. He has faced many challenges in his life but his faith in God remained unshaken. Even when he was terminally ill, he never forgot to thank God for his grace. This approach evokes so much respect in our heart for the great poet 🙏.

My introduction with Rajanikanta's songs took place in my childhood through cassettes of various artists. Krishna Chatterjee has been my all time favourite artist as I feel she has experienced the Divine Grace which is evident in all her songs.

From tomorrow onwards I will be taking one song per day to share with you :)

 Jai Shri Krishna!

RRR (2022) - Telegu Movie

RRR is another great creation from the eminent director S S Rajamouli. It presents the story of two freedom fighters of India- Alluri Sitaram Raju and Komaram Bheem. Though the film is an imaginary story, still, as it is presented with many references to the story of the great epic Ramayan, it is able to create a special interest in the audience. The story, direction and music- every aspect of the film is good. Ram Charan and N T R Junior has acted very well in their respective roles. After Baahubali, this is another chance for the audience to enjoy all the larger than life scenes in this film.

The success of the film lies in the fact that it generates the interest among the audience to know more about Alluri Sitaram Raju and Komaram Bheem, about whom we do not find much information in our school history books.

I also liked the review of this movie by Do Politics and Chaitanya Charan- these two YouTube Channels. You can check out those reviews, searching them with the same names which I have mentioned here. They have covered many more detailed points about this movie.

Overall, this movie definitely presents an unique experience for the audience.

The Tashkent Files- Hindi film (2018)

Vivek Agnihotri made this film about the mystery regarding the death of our second Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. Many questions were there already in the minds of general public from the time the event occured. But those questions remained unanswered for a long time. Since last few years many independent researchers have been working in this field. This film is based mainly on the works of all those researchers.

We come across many theories about the mysterious death through all the characters of the film. Also the characters represent various standpoints of our society, how certain ideologies make people think in a particular way- this point has been portrayed very nicely with all the characters.

Many of us must have watched the film Ek Ruka Hua Faisla ( 1986) film directed by Basu Chatterjee or the Hollywood film  Twelve Angry Men (1957) directed by Sidney Lumet . This film basically follows that pattern of analyzing an incident from different perspective.

And at the end many information from the Mitrokhin Archive is provided for the audience to understand the matter in details.

Overall the film is a nice creation which reveals hidden facts and inspires us to research more about the topic. It instills the element of patriotism in the audience through its dialogues and situations. After watching the film the audience becomes more aware regarding the realities of politics in a country.

Feluda'r Goyendagiri - Darjeeling Jomjomat (Bengali web series on Hoichoi )

As a Bengali, we all are in love with the famous detective character - Feluda, created by the great writer filmmaker Satyajit Ray. He himself have directed the Feluda films like- Sonar Kella and Joy Baba Felunath. Who can forget those classics?

Later we have watched many films on the stories of Feluda, which were directed by his son-  Sandip Roy.

Recently Hoichoi OTT Streaming service came up with the story of 'Darjeeling Jomjomat' in the series named 'Feludar Goyendagiri'

Tota Roy Chowdhury played the role of Feluda, Kalpan Mitra played Topshe and  Ekenbabu famed Anirban Chakrabortry has played Lalmohan Babu. Also there are actors like Barun Chanda, Rahul Banerjee in this series.

The story is divided into 6 episodes. The suspense element is present throughout the series. All the actors have done good work. The bonus for the audience is the background of Darjeeling. We get to see the great peak Kanchanjangha and some of the other popular places of the famous hill station.  Overall, it is a well made series. We have enjoyed the thoroughly.

Before watching the series, the main problem for us as an audience was to accept a new actor in the well known and loving character of Feluda as well as a new director for Feluda series. But as we can understand that change is inevitable part of life. So the direction by Srijit Mukherjee as well as the portrayal of Feluda by Tota Roy Chowdhury was enjoyed by us.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (Hindi Film)

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2  is a horror comedy film directed by Anees Bazmee. The name of the film reminds us of the original film Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan. That was a blockbuster.

But it would be better if we do not consider Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 as a sequel to the original film. Though this film has used some part of the song Mere Dholna (Ami je tomar) from the original film, this film has an individual storyline. It is made as a family entertainment film and  is successful in its purpose. Ghost scenes are handled with care. The story is also good.

All the actors have done fine work. Tabu definitely stands out. Kartik Aryan seems comfortable in his role.

Overall it is an enjoyable one time watch film. As Bollywood films are not doing well in recent years due to the various reasons we all know, this film is refreshing and it may contribute positively to the business of Hindi film industry.

'Shesh Prashna'- A Novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay

Recently I was reading the novel 'Shesh Prashna' by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay again. Previously I read it during my college days. Now after many years, this time I was delving more into the ideologies narrated in the novel. It presents many view points of a society. If a society remains stagnant, then it loses its flow. Society is a living thing and needs to evolve in order to cater to the needs of its members. On the other hand, we need some standarad rules in it so that the foundation remains strong so as to defend it from deteriorating as well as to nourish the spirit of its members. The balance between the two is very very fragile. Both of these sides are presented through many characters in Shesh Prashna. We feel all the characters and start loving them. Ashu Babu, Haren, Satish, Neelima, Ajit, Rajen, Manorama, Bela, Shibnath, Akshay Babu - all characters have different personalites and stay in our mind for a long time. Kamal definitely stands out as the heroine of the novel. I feel this novel makes us think and decide about the society, so that we can keep an equilibrium between the progressive approach and the conservative one.

With best wishes,

Jai Shri Krishna

'Pujarini' - A Poem by Rabindranath Tagore

Recently  I was reading the poem Pujarini by Rabindranath Tagore. I remember we had it in our school syllabus of class eight. The devotion of Srimati touches our heart. The way she shows her courage to worship Lord Buddha keeps inspiring us always. The beautiful poem has a softness which lingers in our mind . Tagore's wonderful writing depicts of the events one by one in details in front of our eyes. I have always loved this poem for its purity.

You can read the poem from the internet.

Tagoreweb is another option, which has all the works of Tagore uploaded in their website.

You can also listen to the poem from Youtube or any other App.

With lots of wishes to all,

Jai Shri Krishna
