Bawarchi (1972)- Hindi Film

Dear Friends, today I am writing about the famous film - Bawarchi, by  Hrishikesh Mukherjee. An enjoyable movie with a great messege about how we can live hapily. Everyone knows about the film :), so much has already been written :) :). Now I am just noting down the points which I enjoyed while watching it again now.

I liked the unique beginning where a red curtain is shown and the narrration of the title credit is read out by Amitabh Bachchan. So creative :) :). After that, playing the role as a  Sutradhar of Sanskrit plays, Amitji introduces us with the characters of 'Shaanti Nivaas' (the name of the residence where the characters of the film live).

All of us are made of many elements, many emotions. Each of us have different nature from others. So it is quite difficult to run a family or a society or a nation smoothly. This is true even for the inmates of 'Shaanti Nivaas'. All persons having different nature, priorities, aspirations - gradually became self centred and indifferent to others.

Here takes place the entry of the new Bawarchi - Raghu, who, as if transforms the house into a heaven on earth!!! Which astonishes us is the way he does it. It appears to be so so simple! But before watching the movie most of us haven't thought about it! Here lies the greatness of the story - Tapan Sinha and the expertise of direction by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, that we get so nice a message through the mode of entertainment of watching a movie :).

Many many scenes of the film are memorable!! The way Raghu teaches them to help others by doing their work also, along with one's own work, the way he tells and makes them experience that we become happy by making others happy. All invaluable lessons about life!!

He takes care of Krishna, gives power/ authority to the old Shiva Prasad and also asks him to use it :). He makes Mita free of her ego regarding dance and teaches her to be humble. The two sister in laws start feeling affection and respect for each other, the start taking care and serving each other :) :). The two elder brothers become loving again. The happiness which Raghu creates in the house starts changing the members and their relations. We can notice the changes which come in them during the course of the story.

The reason behind all these was the selfless and devoted service of Raghu. About which we come to know at the end of the story. Raghu had such a great aim in his life!!! When he realised and experienced true happiness, he did not kept it only to himself. He wanted to spread it to all, so decided to serve mankind in the way he can, using his abilities of Knowledge, Music, Dance and Cooking. This whole-hearted dedication of Raghu in his life's mission is evident from all his actions. That is the reason he can enter any household as a Bawarchi and show his magic on all the members of the house, to make them better human being, to create a better/ happy place to live in. It is as if he has the constant flow of energy within him, a fountain of Happiness. Which pushes him to do all the work, teaching lessons about life and remaining happy all the time. Such a wonderful character! So much to learn from him, just by observing him, along with all the life philosophy he teaches us :) :).

I am at a loss of words while writing about the film. It has touched the core of my heart with its simplicity and dedication. The motivation which we can feel when we go deep into the character of Raghu, can take us so much ahead in life!! True spirit of God is there in the endless motivation to do good to others, serve others, teaching them the proper way to lead a meaningful life.

All the songs are melodious. Music is by Madan Mohan.

Do watch the film to feel the true happiness which is within all of us :)

PK (2014)- Hindi Film

As soon as we take the name of PK, all the controversies come into our mind. Many of them spread by the people who themselves haven't watched it, but only have heard about the plot of the film. Today I thought to write about the points which I liked while watching PK.

A 'being' from another planet observing us and trying to make sense of the activities of the society - the plot is a creative one. I remember the film 'Gods Must Be Crazy'- while watching it, as that film also captures the nuiances of civilization, very beautifully. 'Gods Must be Crazy' is also one of my favourite film :).

Coming back to PK. We start to feel Oneness with PK, when he tells his story to Jaggu, in a police lock up. Then we realise how tough a journey it has been for him. A person not able to understand the language of the land where he is, losing the connection with his own planet, how desperate a state he has been into!!

He narrates about his journey from one place of God to another (temple, Church, Mosque) and so on. The difficulties faced by him in understanding the  different rituals of various religions, as a result, very naturally, the confusions experienced by him, trying everything to impress Bhagwaan and still being unable to do so - all these scenes touch us because of their realistic portrayal. We feel it can happen around us. They are so true!! A being who does not know the systems/rituals, will feel the same as PK. The scene when PK comes to the place where the idol of Ma Durga was being made and earnestly asks Her to help him- that scene touched me so much! Also the lyrics of the song - "Bhagwaan, hai kahan re tu" are so true, in such a mental state!

The credit of the director lies that all these serious issues are dealt with many many light-hearted funny scenes. Audience get the message not through serious situations but through direct practical day to day scenes.  And we also keep on smiling throughout the whole film :).

PK terming different religions as 'company', searching for 'thappa' on new borns, giving a practical example how faith can be used to earn profit (exam day- college gate scene), dressing different people in different attire, referring to his theory of 'wrong number', thinking that Bhagwaan does our work according to the payments made by us and his action of taking refund from temples- all these scenes make us laugh. As well as they are a satire on the social system. The core values of all religions are the same. Limited or wrong interpretation makes all the difference... So much so that all the religions SEEM different from each other to us!...  But if one goes deep into the theories of any religion and reflect on it, the conclusion he/she will reach, will be the same in each case.

The self helping attitude of PK teaches us that in any difficult situation, we should keep on trying with different approaches. If our search is true, then God will help us definitely, in the same way as PK got the help of Jaggu later :).

True Love is another theme which runs parallel to the theme of religion and faith, throughout the whole film. The way PK shows selfless love for Jaggu, helps her and at last leaves her free before going back to his planet- teaches the essence of Love. That is, to empower and to set free :)

Also PK's love/ concern for the whole mankind is shown in his actions/ plans after he meets Jaggu. He becomes eager to tear away the veil of lies used by so called heads of different religions (like Tapasviji in the film). He wants to bring a relief to common man that if proper help is not coming from their gurudev (master), they can help each other. And that would be enough. That concern of PK about the society, was out of the Humane qualities in him. The innocence, kindness and the quick-wit of PK are portrayed beautifully by Aamir Khan.

Another thing which attracted me in this movie is that the shooting of many scenes were done in Delhi. We can actually see many of Delhi's famous places throughout the film. So watching the film was like touring various places of Delhi :) :).

Overall a good film with nice messages which make us think about many issues.

Satyakaam (1970)- A film by Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Recently I watched the film Satyakaam (1969) by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and loved it for its messege. Original story is by the famous Bengali novelist - Narayan Sanyal. It tells us the story of a person named Satyapriya, his ideals, his life and the legacy he leaves behind.

Dharmendra is in the lead role. Wikipedia names this film to be the best of his career. And truly so. If someone watches the film, the height of the character - it is really tough to find such character again in the career of an actor.I have also read in the internet that this film was a favourite of Hrishikesh Mukherjee too.

Sanjeev Kumar plays the role of the close friend of Satyapriya - who narrates the whole story to us.

Ashok Kumar is the grandfather of Satyapriya- Satya Sharan Sharma, who inculcates the values in him from childhood, as his parents died early.

Sharmila Tagore plays the wife of Satyapriya.

Saarika is also there in the film as a child artist, the son of Satyapriya.

When the film starts, we are shown a quote by Mahatma Gandhi that -"For me Truth, Love, Conscience and Fearlessness - is God".

The introduction of the story is narrated by the friend (Sanjeev Kumar), who tells us about the journey to Himalayas, to attain the Truth by Satya Sharan. There he gets the messesge that the best way is always to search for the Truth. Then he comes back to society with the ideals of Satya nishtha, Satya aacharan and Satya sandhaan. These values become the guiding light of that family. So much so, that even uttering a lie would have been impossible for the family members.

Now the film Starts. The story takes us to the time of Independence, Satyapriya has a vision of a great nation in his eyes. But he faces corruption everywhere. Unable to adjust with it or accept it, he keeps on changing job.

During a job, meets a kind hearted maid of a Zamindar/ king, Sharmila, whom he treats respectfully.  In the course of some unfortunate events, with a high aim, Satya priya decides to marry her. That action itself tells us the greatness as well as the strength of the heart of Satyapriya. For this step, his grandfather rejects him along with his wife.

As time goes on, they have a son. But their financial condition remains weak.

Now we also meet Sanjeev Kumar, who has learnt the way to live with the systems of the society. He tries to talk with Satyapriya to make him come out of his rigid stance. But his efforts go in vain.

Satyapriya is diagonised with Cancer. Sharmila faces financial problem. She gets an offer to make Satyapriya sign a document where he would have to compromise with his ideas, but which can fetch her a great fortune. Satyapriya realises the gravity of the situation and signs it, thinking about the hard life his wife would have to face after his death. But Sharmila throws it away. She could not see Satyapriya doing a compromise at the end of his life. She wants him to maintain his high values. Through Sharmila's action, tears of joy flows from Satyapriya's eyes, as he realises how his wife has embraced his ideals. Truly a memorable scene!!!!!

Now grandfather Satya sharan comes and appreciates his grandson, loves him and recites Geeta when Satyapriya's soul leaves the body.

Later while doing last rites, Satya sharan keeps  the son of Satyapriya out of all the rituals with the excuse of his being a minor. But as his mother has told him, the child tells the real reason behind the decision of Satya sharan, (i e - Satyapriya may not be the real father of this child). This truth from the child's mouth opens the eyes of Satya Sharan. He names him as Satyakaam and his grand daughter in law as Jabaala. He embraces them, accepts them as family members.

The background narration tells us that it is not only by the blood relations,  but the person who carries the ideals/ values - Is the one who truly takes ahead the great lineage of a family.

Wonderful film! Satyapriya's character, its struggle, Satya Sharan's character and ideals, Sharmila's character- all are very nicely show. we can compare the character of Sanjeev Kumar, with Satyapriya; their different approaches to deal with a situation, their friendship, trust, mutual understanding! Their friendship is so deep, so fulfilling!  Everything in the movie is to be cherished. It is something which makes us think after the ending.  Something which remains after all these incidents, which does not end with the body.  Which all the near and dear ones of Satyapriya carry forward with them after his death. That is Truth indeed. A very subtle essence, without which the creation cannot exist!! Great messege by the film/ director/ actors, by the story. Salute to all of them.

Do watch it to have an amazing experience :)

Here is the Video from Youtube, but I guess the complete song was not there in the film Unhappy:

Man Mohana Man Mohana

Tum Bin Paun Kaise Chain
Tarsu Tumhiko Din Rain

Chhodhke Apni Kaashi Mathura
Chhodhke Apni Kaashi Mathura
Aake Baso More Nain
Tum Bin Paun Kaise Chain
Kanhaaa
Tarsu Tumhiko Din Rain

Ek Pal Ujiyaara Aaye
Ek Pal Andhiyaara Chhaye
Mann Kyun Na Ghabraaye
Kaise Na Ghabraaye
Maan Jo Koi Do Raha
Apni Rahon Me Paaye
Kaun Disha Jaaye

Tum Bin Kaun Samjhaaye
Tum Bin Kaun Samjhaaye
Raas Rachaiyaa Brindavan Ke
Gokul Ke Baasi
Radha Tumri Daasi
Darshan Ko Hai Pyaasi
Shyam Salone Nand Lala Kishna Banwaari
Tumri Chhab Hai Nyari
Mai To Hoon Tan Mann Haari
Mai To Hoon Tan Mann Haari

Man Mohana Man Mohana
Man Mohana Man Mohana
Kanha Sunona Aaa
Tum Bin Paun Kaise Chain
Tarsu Tumhiko Din Rain

Jeevan Ek Nadiya Hai
Lehron Lehron Behti Jaaye
Isme Mann Ki Naiyaa
Doobe Kabhi Tar Jaaye

Tum Na Khewaiya Ho To
Koi Tat Kaise Paaye
Majdhaaren Dehelaayen
To Tumari Sharan Aaye
Haan Tumri Sharan Aaye

Mai Hoon Tumhari
Hai Tumhara Yeh Mera Jeevan
Tumko Hi Dekhun Mai
Dekhun Koi Darpan
Bansi Ban Jaungi
In Hothon Ki Ho Jaungi
In Sapno Se Jalthal
Hai Mera Mann Angan
Hai Mera Hmmm Hmmm.

Mere To Giridhar Gopal: Song from Hindi Movie- Meera

Tomorrow is Janmashtami. So I was thinking of some special song to post here on this pious occasion. This is one of the most Devotional Songs I have ever heard! It is from the Movie Meera by Gulzaar, here the role of Meera was played by Hema Malini. This song is sung by Vani Jairam, the music and the lyrics are So Pure... The original content of the song was taken from Meera's bhajan which are saturated with the Love for the Lord! I love to listen to this song again and again.

This is the Youtube Link of the Song:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-3w54iLWq0

Here is the Lyrics of the Song ( Lyrics noted and translated by my Dear Brother Shivang and Dear Sister Rekha, I am so delighted to share it with all of you):-

Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi,
Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi,
Jaa ke sir mor mukut, mero pati soi,
Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi,
Mere to Giridhar Gopal.

(Translation: My Lord is Giridhar Gopal and none else. He wears the crown decorated with the feathers of a peacock)

Asuvan jal sinch sinch, prembel boi,
Ab to bel phail gayi, aanand phal hoi;
Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi.

(Translation: Meera says “I have been crying a lot (for all the pain I felt in your departure) and of those tears I irrigated the bel (prostrate plant) of love and now it’s flourishing and I am blissful because now it is giving me the fruit of joy.”)

Taat maat bhraat bandhu, aapano na koi;
Taat maat bhraat bandhu, aapano na koi;
Chhand gayi, kul ki aan, kaa kari hai koi
Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi.

(Translation: Taat, maat, bhrat, bandhu (all the relatives including parents, brothers and even friends), nobody is mine. Meera says that I renounced the reputation of family even and nobody can do anything to me that mean now 'only Krishna is my Saviour'.)

Chunari ke kiye tuk, odh leni loyi;
Chunari ke kiye tuk, odh leni loyi;
Moti monge utaare, banmaalaa poi;
Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi,

(Translation: 'tuk' means torn in pieces, 'loyi' means bhagwa vastra- orange clothes, 'moti monge' means pearls and precious gems.

Meera says that she tore her mantle (chunari) and put on the bhagwa clothes. She put off pearls and gems and wore banmala or garland made of tulsi and chandan wood.)

Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi,
Jaa ke sir mor mukut, mero pati soi,
Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusaro na koi,
Mere to Giridhar Gopal.

(Translation: My Lord is Giridhar Gopal and none else. He wears the crown decorated with the feathers of a peacock.)

I have also included a picture of Hema Malini from the movie in this post. But sadly I could not find a picture of this particular song in the internet. Readers can watch the song from the given link to find out one of the Most Memorable Performances by Hema Malini in this Film.

IKTARA: Hindi Song from the film- Wake Up Sid

Since last 2-3 days I have been listening to these two songs (actually the male and female version of the single song- Iktara). The music, the lyrics and the singing – all are just Great!

Kavita Seth and Torchi Raina- both have sung So Well…. And I came to know from the information available in the Internet that Amit Trivedi has composed this particular song, and Javed Akhtar is the lyricist. I am not sure about the information, but just want to appreciate the whole team who are behind this song!

At first, the lyrics of the female version with the youtube link of the song:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7YDpUy_AOs

O re manwa tu to bawra hai

Tu hi jaane tu kya sochta hai

Tu hi jaane tu kya sochta hai

Baware

Kyun dikhaye sapne tu sote jaagte

Jo barsein sapne boond boond

Nainon ko moond moond

Nainon ko moond moond

Jo barsein sapne boond boond

Nainon ko moond moond

Kaise mai chaloon

Dekh na sakoon

Anjaane raaste

Goonja sa aai koi iktara iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara

Dheeme bole koi iktara iktara

Dheeme bole koi iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara

Sun rahi hoon sudhbudh kho ke

Koi mai kahani

Puri kahani hai kya kise hai pata

Main to kisiki ho ke yeh bhi na jaani

Ruth hai yeh do pal ki ya rahegi sada

Kise hai pata

Kise hai pata

Kise hai pata

Jo barsein sapne boond boond

Nainon ko moond moond

Nainon ko moond moond

Jo barsein sapne boond boond

Nainon ko moond moond

Kaise mai chaloon

Dekh na sakoon

Anjaane raaste

Goonja sa aai koi iktara iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara

Dheeme bole koi iktara iktara

Dheeme bole koi iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara iktara

Goonja sa hai koi iktara.

Now the lyrics and Youtube link of the male version:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otEfmvn2dyU&feature=related

Rooh ka banjara re parinda
Chhad
gaya dil ka re gharonda
Chhad
gaya dil ka re gharonda todke
Re gharonda todke,
gaya chhodke

Je naina karun band band
Beh jaye boond boond

Beh jaye boond boond

Je naina karun band band
Beh jaye boond boond
Tadpaye re, kyun sunaye geet malhar de

[
Bemalang tera iktara iktara

Bemalang tera iktara] (8)

Itra tun basi basi, padi hai sirhane
Band darwaja dekhe lauti hai subah
Thandi hai angeethi seeli, seeli hain deewarein
Goonje takrake inme dil ki sada
Goonje hai re
Goonje hai re

dil ki sada

dil ki sada

Jo naina karun band band
Beh jaye boond boond

Beh jaye boond boond

Jo naina karun band band
Beh jaye boond boond

Tadpaye re, kyun sunaye geet malhar de

[Bemalang tera iktara iktara

Bemalang tera iktara](16)

The main concept (that is ‘deep feeling of Love’ ) is conveyed so well by these words:-

(Female Version)

Jo Barsein Sapne Boond Boond

Nainon Ko Moond Moond

(Male version)

Je naina karun band band

Beh jaye boond boond

And the music in these lines just touches the heart:-

(Female Version)

Kaise Main Chaloon

Dekh Na Sakoon

Anjaane Raaste

(Male version)

Tadpaye re, kyun sunaye geet malhar de

Just wanted to share my favourite music with you all.

(Lyrics- taken from various websites).

With lots of Best Wishes.
